Gerdau is a leading producer of long steel in the Americas and one of the largest suppliers of special steel in the world.  With over 45,000 employees, it has industrial operations in 14 countries in the Americas, Europe and Asia which together represent an installed capacity of over 25 million metric tons of steel per year.  It is the largest recycler in Latin America. Around the world it transforms millions of metric tons of scrap into steel each year, reinforcing its commitment to sustainable development in the regions where it operates.

Today, the Gerdau plant in St. Paul recycles 450,000 short tons of scrap steel annually.  Referred to as a mini-mill, this steel plant receives scrap from around the region, shreds it, removes the non-ferrous materials, melts the scrap and additional alloys, and recasts the steel into 6”x6”x20’ long billets using a continuous casting machine (CCM).  The billets are then sold, or sent to the adjacent rolling mill, creating reinforcing bars, round stock, and other long shapes.

This presentation is a discussion of how Gerdau has gone about designing and building a new $50 million CCM to increase both the annual production to 550,000 short tons and the quality of their steel.

This seminar will be presented in a case study format and will cover:
  • Overview of continuous steel casting process
  • Review of steel types and terminology
  • State of the art continuous steel casting process
  • New CCM project team members
  • New CCM project design challenges
  • New CCM project construction challenges
