This seminar will review the reasons for conducting a failure analysis, and the tools that are used and what they do. A number of case studies will be presented ranging from a large gas turbine failure to a hypodermic needle failure.
Attendees will learn:

  • Why to conduct a failure analysis
  • What tools are used to do a failure analysis and how they work
  • About the failure mode and root cause of a failure
  • What engineers can learn from failure analysis


Lester B. Engel
has BS and MS degrees in Metallurgical Engineering from the University of Cincinnati. He worked for General Electric Company for eleven years in their nuclear systems program and aircraft engine group. He also worked for Brown Boveri Turbomachinery for nine years as chief metallurgist. Mr. Engel then founded Engel Metallurgical in 1983.

Engel Metallurgical is a metallurgical consulting firm located in St. Cloud, MN that provides metallurgical consulting services to a wide variety of clients. Mr. Engel has over 40 years experience in performing failure analyses and has presented numerous talks on metallurgical issues and failure analysis to a wide variety of rganizations. He is a licensed professional engineer in Minnesota and Ohio.
